Happy Friday! It’s suppose to snow a lot in the city on Saturday, and I’m secretly hoping it does because I think being snowed it is super cozy.
Nick and I are headed to a show at Lincoln Center tonight before the potential snow hits so that should be fun. Share your weekend plans in the comments!
This week we’re chatting about probiotics and prebiotics – what the heck is the difference and should you be concerned about getting enough of each. I hope you guys enjoy!

This was a really great post! As a healthcare provider, I can 100% verify that antibiotics are SO. OVER. USED. And the crazy part is that overuse of antibiotics isn’t a new phenomenon– we’ve known for years (decades?) that we’re contributing to microbial resistance. In my practice, I see patients recommending their own antibiotics or demanding them from their PCP for typical viral infections. I would so, so encourage you to stick to your guns with these patients (even if that means not appeasing their requests) and recommending OTC items for symptom relief, and also I would encourage you to really stick to IDSA guidelines and stay in tune with your local antibiogram. Thanks for all your hard work!

This is such a useful post! I have IBS and have been following a modified low-FODMAP diet for a while, gradually (but admittedly pretty slowly) adding FODMAPs back in to my diet, but I know that a lot of FODMAPs are essentially probiotics. I’ve heard of ways to follow a low-FODMAP diet but still make sure you’re getting enough probiotics–I may need to do a little more research. I certainly don’t want this diet that’s supposed to be helping my gut actually do more damage in the long run. Thanks for sharing this information!

Prebiotics, not probiotics, sorry

This was so informative! I truly had no idea what the difference was between probiotics and prebiotics before reading this post. Thank you!

This most was So SO helpful.. thank you. I love my daily kombucha & dark chocolate 🙂 You always inspire me to eat wholesome yummy foods! I do have a question because we are totally on the same page with antibiotics… My son (7 months) has had two ear infections already & I’m wondering if you know any different cures instead of an antibiotic? I think it’s interesting because Drake ( my almost 3 year old) has never needed them yet!

Not sure if you’ll see this, but I have a few questions regarding this video. Some of what you say in this video doesn’t seem to mesh with other, newer posts I’ve seen from you. Do you still hold to the theory that dairy is inflammatory and is wise for most everyone to limit? I know you’re currently (or recently were) dairy free due to your son’s dairy allergy, but I’ve gotten the impression that you would readily incorporate dairy into your food choices if you weren’t breastfeeding. What about always trying to buy organic due to antibiotic use in other food production? Is that still a valid concern? I’ve heard both ways (only buy organic because conventional is bad for you and that studies have shown no significant difference between organic and conventional) and am not sure whether it’s something I should be spending money and mental energy on or not.
