I did a day in the life post about a month ago when I was working three 12 hour shifts and then had full days dedicated to the blog/business. So I thought it would be fun to show how much my days have changed now that I changed jobs and work a normal 9-6pm, Monday through Friday job. Here ya go!
5:40am – alarm goes off and I lay in bed while Nick makes coffee.
5:50am – Nick is my human snooze button and lures me out of bed with a coffee. Brush my teeth, wash face and meander into the living room.
5:55am – read the bible {I just started a new devotional in James with SRT} and journal a bit. if my day doesn’t start with this, the day is way more chaotic.
6:20am – I was suppose to run with my friend Jena {who conveniently lives in my building till the end of the month} but my legs feel so heavy and tired so I text her and nix the run. We’re hanging out tonight so I’ll still see her and instead I keep reading on the couch.
6:45am – Pack lunches for Nick and I and grab the overnight oats out of the fridge. Sometimes he packs them and makes breakfast, sometimes I do. Really, whoever is less rushed.
6:55am – Hop in shower.
7:05am – Sit down with Nick to eat breakfast. We switch between overnight oats and eggs and toast right now. This was 1/2 cup each of oats, whole milk greek yogurt and almond milk, plus a spoonful of chia seeds, pinch of salt, cinnamon and blueberries {use whatever portions of oats/yog/milk your body needs! this is what I’ve found to work for me right now}
I slice on a banana between the two bowls, pour on some granola and add a scoop of pb.
7:20am – we finished breakfast and Nick cleans dishes while I prep for my 7:30 client and simultaneously throw on mascara and my hair into a wet bun.
7:30am – talk to a Nutshell client.
8:05am – wrap up client note, put on clothes, pack my work bag and head out the door.
8:15am – get on a Citi bike and bike up the west side highway to work. It’s about a 25ish minute bike ride and I listen to an audio book and then call my friend Jess to catch up. I will take a bike over the subway anyyyyyday because it’s so much less stressful. {aka I’m in control and don’t have to worry about train delays}
8:55am – get to work and settle in
9:10 – the doctor I’m working for now is training me so well and thoroughly which is very different than my last job where I kind of got thrown to the wolves — you learn fast that way, but it’s really stressful and overwhelming. so right now I’m building up the number of patients I can see in a day. right now I’m at 4-6 with the goal of sixteen in a couple weeks.
In between patients, I’m getting more comfortable with how to use the electronic medical record, I read up on conditions/diseases I’m not as comfortable managing and then I help the doctor sort through patient documents that other physicians have faxed over. There is never a time to not be busy which I love!
10:30am – green smoothie snack + a hunk of homemade bread a patient brought in {best part about primary care is patients bringing food to the clinic}
12:40pm – break for lunch. I always try to go outside and sit in central park and eat lunch because fresh air makes me so happy and after being inside all morning I need some vitamin D.
This week we roasted up some brussels, broccoli and green beans to top some mixed greens with. Nick takes chicken on his {we just buy a rotisserie for convenience} and I top mine with some cheese or nutritional yeast or sunflower seeds plus olive oil. Plus cucumber and crackers with hummus, an orange, and some chocolate.
1:25pm – head back into work for the afternoon. I see a couple patients and then come in and shadow the doctor when he sees a few interesting patients which helps me learn.
6pm – I overshot my hunger at lunch I think because I was full all afternoon, but by the time I left work I knew I needed to snack since it had been so long since lunch even though I wasn’t that hungry {part of intuitive eating is self care – eating when you’re not neccessarily hungry but you know your body needs some nourishment}
This mini larabar was just enough to give me something but not spoil my appetite.
6:05 – hop on Citi bike and bike down to Chelsea for an event with Zespri Kiwifruit. I emailed and asked if my friend Jena could come and they said yes! loved that.
6:30pm – go to event, drink, eat, meet people, chat. It’s always fun to catch up with my RD friends and meet new people too. I actually ran into a friend, Molly, I went to high school with that is an RD in the city. Small world!
Dinner was several bites of appetizers including these salmon tostada things, chicken skewers (both super good) and a couple kiwi popsicles plus wine x 2.
8:15pm – Jena and I decide to walk home along the west side highway since it was nice out.
9:15pm – totally overshoot how long it would take us to walk home. get home, unload my stuff, Nick washes out lunch tupperware (bless that man) and hangs with me while I eat something – I knew I needed something else before I went to bed since dinner was appetizers. I ate a salad with some chicken that is went unpictured because I forgot, plus some popcorn..
And some Talenti (this flavor though….so dreamy) … Nick and I hang and catch up on our days.
9:45pm – wrap up this post for a few minutes and then get ready for bed.
9:55pm – we crawl into bed…I’m so tired.
**side note: Nick is my bedtime/sleeping savior because pre marriage I was piddling around on the computer and blog until like 11pm and then would sleep from 11:30/midnight to 7 or 7:30am. Now, in bed by 10pm at the latest and up between 5:30 and 6am ….who AM I?

I LOVE how Nick takes care of you; what a selfless husband, and I LOVE how much you love your husband and how much you talk about how kind he is to you. <3 And what an amazing full day. City biking does sound so much more relaxing than trying to navigate the subway.

Love seeing daily posts 🙂 It literally sounds like the perfect work day, if you ask me! Plus your eats always look delicious. That talenti though 😉 mhmmmm!

Oh my word, the James series on SRT is SO SO good! I was convicted every day!

Love everything about this– trying to get into a similar routine in my new 9-6. Also, where is that sweater from the Zespri event from?? I love it!

Gotta love that grandma schedule! I’m with ya. I’d much rather be in bed early and up early!! I feel like I’m so much more productive that way.
Robyn says
I’m learning this is what’s best for me even though sometimes I’m like wait…one more tv show!

Love this! And super impressed with your getting up early in the morning. If I have to be somewhere, I get up exactly one hour before – just enough time to eat breakfast, get ready, and get out the door. I try to get up earlier but I am just not a morning person!
Robyn says
and girl, that is OKAY that you are not a morning person – do what you love 🙂

I love how living in the city you can walk and bike around everywhere! Such a great way to get some sunshine this time of year. Those salmon toastadas sound so interesting. I’ve never thought of pairing salmon and kiwi, but that would actually be super awesome in full taco form! I’m the same way just lingering at night until 11sh rolls around. I’ve been doing my best to break that habit though because getting enough sleep is SO important.

Love these day in the life posts! 🙂 interesting thing you mentioned about overshooting your hunger. That’s actually something I really struggle with. Could you do a post touching on that? I.e finding balance between enough and too much and intuitive eating after you’ve overdone it (and can’t really listen to hunger cues)
Robyn says
sure – great post idea!

Love day in the life posts 🙂 That hunk of bread looks SO good..definitely have to go bake some bread now!

She Reads Truth is such a great resource! And I’m glad to see that you write in your Bible, too. It really helps me relate and process.
Robyn says
I love SRT and the bible margins for that very reason! 🙂
Kate says
Where did you get your lunch container??
Robyn says
tj maxx!
Amanda says
Can’t wait for that 9-5 life! Haha. Also, did you prep your green smoothie ahead of time? I feel like I did that once and it got all sorts of gross so I’m just curious what’s in it!
Robyn says
I make them in the morning – so gross if it’s too far ahead!
Kaylee says
It makes me so happy that you & Nick get to spend more time together with your new work schedule. I’ve also really been digging eating in the sunshine. Vitamin D for the win! That bit on intuitive eating including eating for self-car, not necessarily when your body is hungry. ????
