I’m writing this post from home in Indianapolis!
Feels. So. Good.
I took a late night flight home at 8:30 last night and my little brother picked me up from the airport at midnight since my mom is working today and needs her beauty rest. Isn’t it crazy how you can be in one place all day and then boom. You’re 700 miles apart from where you started in a couple hours. Flying is so crazy to me.
Anywho, I slept in this morning till 8 or so, took my momma to work so I could have the car and ate a leisurely breakfast while chatting it up with my older brother. Sweet perfection.
I’m about to go to the gym for some light ellipticalling and maybe I’ll pick up a dumbell or two and then meeting a friend for lunch!
Now that the Rest and Reset Challenge is over, I’ve been thinking about all the things the last 5 weeks has taught me.
1. Our bodies are beautiful things. They carry us through so much. I’m still in awe at how the body can run 26.2 miles and then with some rest can bounce back and keep going. I’m so thankful for that.
2. Just how important rest it. If I’m being honest with myself, I’m really bad at resting. If I’m not on the go, getting in a morning workout, and doing something “productive” at every waking second I start to feel “guilty.” What the?! We are suppose to rest. We need rest. It’s been such a heart and body and mind refresher.
3. Running is a huge part of my identity, but if I stop running I’m still Robyn. And there are lots of other life giving things I can do apart from running. Yoga and early morning quiet time and long walks with friends are just as stress relieving and calming as pounding the pavement on an early morning 5 miler.
4. Not having to plan when you’re going to get your workout in and sleeping in later is really, really freeing. For the past 10 years I think the longest I’ve taken off from running completely is a like 10 days. It’s what I do and a huge part of my daily routine. And although I’m super eager for early morning sunrise runs, not planning ahead for a 5am run or working my schedule around a Saturday long run or after work run has allowed me to do a lot of other things. Like coffee with friends, or sleeping in, or spontaneous weekend trips or after work plans. Running fits into my life, my life doesn’t fit around running. How wonderful.
5. A greater appreciation for running and exercising. It’s been so rejuvinating to take this time off and now instead of feeling rundown I’m feeling renewed! I think we can start to take advantage of exericsing when it’s something that we assume we’ll always be doing or that we always will be injury free and able to do. For me, every run or workout feels like a gift. Like something I get to do not something I have to do.
6. Regardless of if we are working out or not, our bodies need lots of fuel so we can go about our daily lives energized not exhausted, feeling happy instead of irritated or anxious, and nourished rather than deprived. My hunger levels despite not running really suprised me. Hurrah for metabolisms!
So I’ll leave you with one of my favorite oatmeal combinations this winter!
Have a relaxing and restful and love filled, festive weekend friends!
